Sanctuary of Our Lady of Licheń – Lent retreat

wycieczka do Lichenia

The history of apparitions in Licheń dates back to the 19th century.

According to accounts, in 1813 soldier Tomasz Kłossowski, wounded in the Battle of Leipzig, prayed to Our Lady for salvation. She appeared to him and promised help if he spread Her image.

Several decades later, in 1850–1852, Our Lady appeared to shepherd Mikołaj Sikatka near Licheń. She conveyed a call to conversion, prayer, and penance, foretelling coming difficult times (which many later associated with the cholera epidemic).

The image of Our Lady of Licheń was placed in a local chapel, then in the church, attracting numerous pilgrims.

In the 20th century, a sanctuary was established there, and in the 1990s construction of a monumental basilica began. Today, Licheń is one of Poland’s most important pilgrimage sites.

This place attracts pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, offering not only spiritual experiences but also remarkable architectural and natural features.

Spiritual Atmosphere and Devotion to Our Lady of Licheń

The sanctuary in Licheń is a place that draws the faithful seeking prayer, peace, and spiritual renewal. Our Lady of Licheń is venerated here, and Her miraculous image has been surrounded by special devotion since the 19th century. The faithful believe the image has the power to heal and bring consolation, and its history is tied to the apparitions of Our Lady near Licheń.

The sanctuary regularly hosts Holy Masses, devotions, and retreats that help pilgrims deepen their faith.

Impressive Basilica – Largest Church in Poland

One of the main reasons to visit Licheń is the monumental Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows Queen of Poland. Built from 1994–2004, it impresses with its size and architecture:

– capacity: about 7,000 faithful.

Inside the basilica, one can admire beautiful mosaics, paintings, and gilded decorative elements, which I’m not a big fan of. It’s also worth noting the largest organs in Poland, with over 12,000 pipes.

 Golgotha and Other Prayer Sites

The sanctuary grounds feature many places conducive to reflection and prayer. One of the most important is Golgotha, an artificial hill with chapels and sculptures depicting the Passion of Our Lord. Walking through Golgotha is a unique opportunity for contemplation of the mystery of suffering and redemption.

Additionally, pilgrims can visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross, the miraculous spring, and the Marian clergy cemetery.

Peace and Natural Surroundings

The sanctuary in Licheń is set amid picturesque nature. Nearby is Lake Licheńskie, offering beautiful views and a chance to rest in nature. Strolling the sanctuary grounds, one can admire well-kept gardens and parks that foster silence and contemplation.

Religious Events and Pilgrimages

Licheń hosts many important religious events, such as:

– the feast of Our Lady of Licheń (August 15),

– pilgrimages of various professional groups,

– retreats and days of recollection organized by the Marian Fathers.

The sanctuary in Licheń is not only a place of religious worship but also a tourist attraction. Its architecture, history, and peaceful atmosphere make it worth visiting, regardless of faith. Everyone will find something here – both those seeking spiritual reflection and those wishing to admire the beauty of one of Europe’s largest sanctuaries.

Retreats

The Marian Fathers, custodians of the Licheń Sanctuary, regularly organize retreats for those needing to escape the hustle of big cities and spend time in prayer and contemplation.

For some time, I had planned to visit several important Catholic sites in Poland.

For Lent retreats, I was looking for a place where I could spend a few days in peace and reflection, and I planned to write my honest opinion about this place for anyone interested in such a stay. I chose Licheń without any recommendations. I managed to arrive here at the last moment before the tourist season fully began.

I can wholeheartedly recommend staying in Licheń:

  • wonderful Marian devotion site surrounded by beautiful nature: fountains, monuments, benches, ponds, chapels, paths, many places to explore,
  • beautiful basilica with the miraculous image that I fell in love with,
  • wonderful conferences, which I would call deeply thought-out, touching the listener’s heart,
  • delicious home-cooked dinners,
  • time for prayer and walks,
  • daily Holy Mass with good homilies,
  • the Marian Fathers serve pilgrims with dedication and hard work.

Licheń is a place of immense spiritual and cultural significance. The monumental basilica, picturesque Golgotha, miraculous image of Our Lady of Licheń, and peaceful surroundings make it worth visiting for a moment of reflection or a longer pilgrimage. Regardless of the reason for the visit, Licheń leaves unforgettable impressions and inspires reflection on faith, history, and the beauty of sacred architecture.

I will definitely return!
