Every Sunday I try to dedicate some time to enrich my knowledge as a Catholic, so I most often read a passage from a book I previously purchased, or browse the internet to find interesting materials or articles on Christian themes. I’ve always been fascinated by the lives of saints, especially the contemporary ones.
Quite recently I came across a YouTube video: Giorgio: A modern-day miracle story.
It tells the story of a young man, Kevin Becker, who fell from a roof and suffered severe brain damage as a result. Doctors gave him no chance of survival.
Kevin’s cousin gave his mother a photo of Giorgio and asked her to pray for his intercession with God to obtain the grace of health for Kevin.
Kevin’s mother prayed to the blessed and placed his photo by the pillow where her unconscious son had been lying in the hospital for several days. The next day, Kevin woke up from the coma.
Kevin had never heard of Frassati before the accident. Upon returning home from the hospital, he told his mother about a new roommate he had seen. His mother showed him a picture of Blessed Pier Giorgio, and it turned out to be him whom Kevin had seen.
Kevin recovered fully. He changed his life. He now approaches life more seriously and strives to imitate his savior, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.
Kevin’s medical documentation was sent to the Vatican. I trust that Kevin’s healing case will become the miracle needed for Bl. Giorgio’s canonization.
I first heard about this young blessed in 2016, when his relics came to Poland for their peregrination, as well as for World Youth Day. The motto of these events was: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7). Pier Giorgio is a model to follow for young people and not only. With his entire life, he gave incredible witness to mercy realized toward every person he encountered.
Frassati visited not only Kraków. His relics, that is, the coffin containing the body of the blessed which did not decompose, appeared in 9 other Polish cities as well.
I encourage you to learn about the short but incredibly fascinating life of this saint. It’s truly worth familiarizing yourself with the details of his intriguing life.
Biography:
He was born on April 6, 1901 in Turin, Italy.
1918-1925 – studied mining engineering at the Royal Polytechnic in Turin – did not complete his studies, died before his last two exams.
Prayer, Communion, adoration were inseparable elements of Pier Giorgio’s life. He loved the mountains.
He died on July 4, 1925 in his family home in Turin from Heine-Medin disease, otherwise known as polio, which he contracted from the poor people he cared for. The illness lasted about a week. No one noticed it because at the same time the whole family was attending to Giorgio’s dying grandmother.
On May 20, 1990 in Rome, Pope St. John Paul II declared Pier Giorgio Frassati Blessed.
Currently, the coffin containing the blessed’s body can be found in the Duomo di Torino, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin.
Although I’ve known Frassati’s story for quite some time, I am still deeply impressed by his person:
- the strength of his character in overcoming difficulties, and maturity despite his young age in understanding the commandment of love toward others,
- determination in helping neighbors and striving for holiness,
- putting others before his own good,
- modesty and excellent time management for helping others, studies, friends, prayer, and Eucharist,
- a smile on his face no matter what,
- the ability not to worry about, among other things, what others would say
Christian values are slowly being lost due to consumerism, comfort, egoism, and conformism, so we no longer feel the need to make an effort or help others.
His life’s witness shows us contemporaries that IT IS WORTH LIVING BEAUTIFULLY.
Pope Paul VI said: “Pier Giorgio showed that one can be modern and one can be a Christian.”
Liturgical memorial: July 4
Prayer:
God, our Father, give us the courage to rise higher, to move away from the temptations of mediocrity and banality. Help us, like Pier Giorgio, to open ourselves to great things and to accept with joy, Lord, Your invitation to holiness; do not let us, through false modesty, think that we are not called to it, or that it is beyond our strength.
Through the intercession of Pier Giorgio, grant us the grace to confidently follow the path “verso l’alto.”
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
